Case Study
Background
A high-potential functional leader was unexpectedly elevated to serve as GM of a large global organization—up from her previous team of a few dozen—after a senior leader’s sudden departure. The change came with significant visibility and a steep learning curve. She was now responsible not only for a much larger team but also for navigating greater cross-functional complexity and delivering results under higher scrutiny. The role demanded rapid growth, strategic perspective, and resilience amid intense pressure.
Approach
Through an executive coaching engagement, Eric created a space where she could unpack the complexity of the transition, de-stress, and make sense of new leadership challenges. He provided a safe, nonjudgmental space for her to voice concerns, test ideas, and reflect honestly. Eric also provided targeted guidance on the shift from functional to enterprise leadership, including shifts in internal mindset, navigating new responsibilities and levels of complexity, managing senior stakeholders, and managing self when time and energy were scarce.
Results
During the time of the coaching engagement, the client:
- Successfully led a large organization during a critical time of change
- Earned the confidence of top leadership to a greater degree
- Connected with and leveraged her core leadership strengths, and gained greater self-confidence
- Took ownership in a high-ambiguity environment, making important decisions without a safety net
- Built strong relationships with senior executives and cross-functional peers
- Gained significantly enhanced visibility and a more highly developed personal brand
